‘I deserved the award,’ Jay Jay Okocha reveals his biggest career regret

Austin Jay-Jay Okocha has admitted that failing to win the CAF African Player of the Year award remains one of his biggest career regrets.

Former Super Eagles captain Austin Jay-Jay Okocha has admitted that failing to win the CAF African Player of the Year award remains one of his biggest career regrets.

Renowned for his dazzling dribbles, exceptional skill, and creativity on the ball, Okocha was one of the finest players of his generation. The former Super Eagles captain enjoyed an illustrious career with clubs such as Eintracht Frankfurt, Fenerbahçe, Paris Saint-Germain, and Bolton Wanderers.

He was also a key part of Nigeria’s 1994 Africa Cup of Nations-winning squad and the historic team that qualified for the country’s first FIFA World Cup that same year.

Three-Time Nominee, But No CAF Title

Despite his brilliance, Okocha never claimed Africa’s top individual football honor. He was nominated for the CAF African Player of the Year award in 1998, 2003, and 2004.

His best finishes were second place in 1998 and 2004, while he placed third in 2003.

Speaking with Toke Makinwa, Okocha revealed that missing out on the award remains a lingering disappointment.

“I don’t want to sound greedy, but I’ve had an amazing career—I never thought I would make it that big,” Okocha said. “But of course, when you look back, there are moments when you feel you could have done better. If I had to pick one regret, it would be not winning the African Player of the Year award.”

BBC Recognition vs. CAF Snub

Despite never clinching the CAF award, Okocha pointed out that his three-time BBC African Player of the Year triumph was proof of his impact in African football.

“I thought I did enough to win it because it wasn’t a fluke that I won the BBC African Player of the Year three times, But maybe it just wasn’t meant to be.” he added.
