Kaizer Chiefs plot move for former Rangers star amid goalkeeping overhaul

Kaizer Chiefs are reportedly targeting former Rangers international keeper as a potential signing ahead of the 2025/2026 Premiership season

Kaizer Chiefs have reportedly been offered the services of Nigerian goalkeeper Japhet Opubo as they step up efforts to strengthen their squad ahead of the 2025/26 Betway Premiership season.

The 30-year-old, currently with Lobi Stars in the Nigerian Premier Football League, is being viewed as a potential solution to Amakhosi’s ongoing goalkeeping struggles, according to Soccer Laduma.

Opubo, who has previously featured for Bayelsa United, Heartland FC, Sunshine Stars, and Enugu Rangers, was part of the Rangers squad that clinched the NPFL title in the 2023/24 season.

Known for his calm presence and shot-stopping abilities, he kept two clean sheets in 12 NPFL appearances last season and added two more in four CAF Champions League outings.

A source close to the situation told Soccer Laduma,

“Japhet Opubo is a top goalkeeper who has proven himself in Nigeria over the past few seasons, and he could be a good addition at a big club like Kaizer Chiefs. His representatives are assessing options for him, and there is a possibility that he can be offered to Kaizer Chiefs.”

The Soweto giants are reportedly evaluating their options, especially with Rwanda international Fiacre Ntwari linked with a move away from Naturena.

Bruce Bvuma and Brandon Petersen, who alternated in goal last season, were unable to provide the consistency needed during a disappointing campaign in which Chiefs conceded the second-most goals in the league.

The club had previously shown interest in Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, but the Chippa United man recently renewed his contract.

Other names linked with the club include Renaldo Leaner of Sekhukhune United and Malian international Djigui Diarra, who plies his trade with Tanzanian giants Young Africans.
