Kwara United ended a 40-year wait for a major trophy by beating Abakaliki FC 4-3 on penalties in a tightly contested final. The game ended 0-0 in regulation time, and Kwara held their nerve in the shootout after missing their first kick.
Despite a strong showing by Abakaliki FC, who had shocked heavyweights like Enyimba, Katsina United, Nasarawa, and Ikorodu City en route to the final, Kwara United’s experience told in the end.
Junior Aimufua came closest for Kwara in open play, hitting the post in the first half, while Wasiu Alalade had a goal ruled out for offside in the second.
