Late drama as Morocco and Zambia draw in WAFCON 2024 Opener

WAFCON 2024 kicks off with Morocco and Zambia drawing in Rabat as Banda strikes early and Chebbak nets dramatic late equaliser.

The 2024 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) began with fireworks on Saturday night as host nation Morocco played out a thrilling 2-2 draw with Zambia at the Rabat Olympic Stadium.

Zambia’s captain and talisman, Barbara Banda, wasted no time making an impact, firing her side ahead inside the first minute — a nightmare start for the Moroccan defence, which was caught cold straight from kick-off.

Morocco responded swiftly, earning a penalty in the 12th minute, which was confidently converted to restore parity. But the Southern Africans weren’t done.

In the 27th minute, striker Racheal Kundananji capitalised on more slack defending from the hosts to restore Zambia’s lead with a composed finish.

The Atlas Lionesses, roared on by a passionate home crowd, pressed for an equaliser in the second half but were often met with a resilient Zambian backline.

It took a moment of brilliance from experienced midfielder Ghizlan Chebbak to draw Morocco level again, curling home a late equaliser that salvaged a point for the 2022 runners-up.

The result reflects the competitive edge that has come to define WAFCON in recent years, though questions remain about the hosts’ defensive frailties.

Conceding so early — in just the opening seconds — is being described as a coach’s worst-case scenario.

Despite the defensive concerns, Morocco’s attacking determination and Zambia’s explosive start ensured that the tournament opened with a compelling contest.

Their strong performances in recent years also saw them qualify for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, underlining their growing stature in African women’s football.

Zambia, meanwhile, is featuring in its fourth WAFCON tournament. They claimed third place in 2022 after defeating Nigeria in the bronze medal match and will be looking to build on that momentum this time around.
