Lookman eager for new challenge after Atletico Madrid move

Ademola Lookman has spoken publicly for the first time since Atletico Madrid confirmed an agreement with Atalanta for his transfer, describing his excitement after arriving in the Spanish capital.

The Super Eagles winger touched down in Madrid on Sunday evening as the deal moved closer to completion, pending a medical examination and the signing of final contract documents.

Speaking briefly to reporters at the airport, Lookman expressed his delight at the prospect of the move.

“I’m very happy to be here, very, very happy. I’m looking forward to the challenge,” he said.

When asked whether he had already spoken to Atlético head coach Diego Simeone, the 28-year-old smiled before replying simply: “No.”

Atlético later released a statement confirming that an agreement had been reached with Atalanta for the Nigerian international, with the transfer now at its final stages.

“Atlético de Madrid and Atalanta have agreed to the transfer of 28-year-old Nigerian international Ademola Lookman, who is already in Madrid. The agreement is pending a medical examination and the signing of his contract,” the club said.

Lookman’s switch to Spain brings an end to days of speculation over his future. The winger had appeared close to a move to Turkey, with Fenerbahçe previously reaching a verbal agreement with Atalanta and agreeing personal terms with the player.

However, negotiations stalled over payment structure, opening the door for Atlético to advance their interest.
