Fulham head coach Marco Silva says Calvin Bassey’s absence from the starting line-up since the Africa Cup of Nations is down to competition for places rather than any dip in form.
The Nigeria defender, one of Fulham’s standout performers last season, has not started a Premier League match since returning from international duty in late January.
Bassey was an unused substitute in Fulham’s draw with Brighton before making a brief five-minute appearance in last weekend’s defeat by Manchester United.

During his absence at AFCON, Spanish defender Jorge Cuenca stepped into the side and impressed alongside Joachim Andersen, helping Fulham maintain their defensive stability.
Silva admitted it was widely expected that Bassey would return straight into the team after his strong performances for Nigeria, but insisted Cuenca’s displays have earned him continuity.
“It’s a great thing for the team,” Silva said.
“Calvin has had a huge impact at this club and has great potential to keep improving.
“Cuenca stepped in and showed his qualities. This is competition, and that’s healthy.”

Bassey had been a key figure in Fulham’s defence across the first half of the season and was named the club’s Player of the Year last campaign.

Silva stressed that selection decisions are based on form and balance rather than reputation, adding that competition for places benefits the squad as a whole.
