Kelechi Mejuobi has been appointed acting president of the Nigeria Referees Association following the death of its former leader Sani Zubairu.
The decision was announced after an emergency virtual meeting of the association’s National Executive Committee and State Executive Committees held on 31 March.
Members described Zubairu’s death as a major loss to Nigeria’s refereeing community. In line with the association’s statutes, Mejuobi, who previously served as deputy president, will complete the remainder of his tenure.
In his first remarks, Mejuobi thanked members for their support and pledged transparent and inclusive leadership.
He also committed to continuing the “Rediscover NRA Agenda”, a reform programme aimed at modernising the organisation and improving standards.
The association confirmed that all existing appointments made under the late president will remain in place to ensure continuity, including advisory and committee roles.
As part of its reform efforts, the NRA said it would expand its revenue base by creating a marketing and sponsorship unit to attract corporate partnerships.
Plans are also in place to introduce new technology, including the development of an official website to streamline membership processes, examinations and communication.
The NRA highlighted concerns over Nigeria’s lack of representation at major international tournaments, noting that no Nigerian referee has officiated at elite competitions such as the Africa Cup of Nations or global events organised by FIFA and Confederation of African Football in recent years.
To address this, the association plans to strengthen its grading and assessment systems to better prepare referees for international assignments.
