Morocco issues AFCON-themed coin and banknote

Morocco has issued a commemorative banknote and coin to celebrate its hosting of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the kingdom’s central bank, Bank Al-Maghrib (BAM), announced.

The silver coin, valued at 250 dirhams ($27.5), and the 100-dirham banknote carry Moroccan national symbols and highlight the country’s newly developed sports facilities. Both were designed and produced entirely by Moroccan specialists.

The coin, made from a silver and copper alloy and weighing nearly 30 grams, features a portrait of King Mohammed VI on its front, alongside inscriptions in Arabic reading “Mohammed VI” and “Royaume du Maroc.” The year of issue, 1447-2025, is also displayed in Arabic and Tifinagh script.

The 100-dirham banknote showcases Morocco’s commitment to sport and its modern stadium infrastructure. Its design includes the portrait of King Mohammed VI, the kingdom’s coat of arms, a representation of the Prince Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex in Rabat, a map of Africa, a Moroccan arabesque motif, and a stylised football.
