Ndidi and Mateta’s Europa League battle produced a moment neither player will forget

Wilfred Ndidi and Jean-Philippe Mateta went viral after a bizarre shirt-pulling duel in Besiktas’ 2-2 Europa League draw with Crystal Palace on Thursday night.

Wilfred Ndidi and Jean-Philippe Mateta turned a fierce midfield battle into one of the more unusual talking points from Thursday night’s UEFA Europa League clash between Besiktas and Crystal Palace.

The two players were involved in several physical contests during the 2-2 draw in Istanbul, but one particular duel around the 15th minute caught the attention of football fans online.

Mateta was attempting to hold his ground as Ndidi challenged him after a pass into Besiktas’ half. Neither player appeared willing to give way, with the Crystal Palace striker using his strength to resist the Nigerian midfielder’s attempts to stop him.

The tussle took an unexpected turn when Mateta managed to pull Ndidi’s shirt from behind, dragging it over the Besiktas midfielder’s head and briefly leaving him with his vision covered.

Ndidi appeared unimpressed by the incident and brought Mateta down with a foul, bringing the unusual exchange to an end.

The moment quickly attracted attention on social media, offering a lighter episode from a contest that otherwise delivered goals, momentum swings and a late red card.

Ndidi and Mateta both found the net

There was an added twist to the encounter: both players later made their mark on the scoresheet.

Ndidi opened the scoring for Besiktas in the second minute of first-half stoppage time, running onto a pass from substitute Salih Ozcan before beating Crystal Palace goalkeeper Walter Benitez.

Palace responded after the break, with Yeremy Pino equalising in the 52nd minute before Mateta struck two minutes later to put the visitors ahead.

Besiktas recovered through substitute Junior Olaitan, whose longrange effort found the bottom corner in the 73rd minute to restore parity.

The hosts’ hopes of finding a winner suffered a setback five minutes later when Umit Akdag was sent off for a reckless challenge on Jorgen Strand Larsen, who was subsequently forced off.

Neither side could find another goal, leaving the teams to share the points in an entertaining 2-2 draw.

The night delivered more than goals. Their earlier physical contest supplied one of the match’s most memorable images, while their contributions in front of goal ensured that both remained central to the story of the encounter.
