NFF President Gusau hails Super Eagles progress after successful International break

Shehu Dikko reveals FIFA may dock South Africa points over ineligible player, potentially reopening Super Eagles path to the 2026 World Cup.

President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Ibrahim Musa Gusau, has praised the Super Eagles’ performances during the recent international break, describing the team’s progress as a success in both results and talent discovery.

Speaking to the NFF’s official website, Gusau said the primary objective of the international window was to assess new players and expand the options available to the national team coaches ahead of future competitions.

“I can tell you categorically that we achieved our sporting objectives, which were the most important in this case,” Gusau said.

“The principal goal was to provide windows for the coach and his crew to take a look at new players that might be positive additions to the team going forward.”

The Super Eagles clinched the Unity Cup title in London, defeating Ghana 2-1 in the semi-final and edging Jamaica 5-4 on penalties after a 2-2 draw in the final. They also played to a 1-1 draw against Russia in a high-profile friendly at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow.

Among the standout performers were Genk forward Tolu Arokodare, who scored a poacher’s goal against Russia, and returning goalkeeper Maduka Okoye, who impressed with his form.

The NFF boss also singled out defenders Benjamin Frederick and Igoh Ogbu, as well as fullback Felix Agu and midfielder Christantus Uche, as players who made positive impressions.

Home-based talents Papa Daniel Mustapha, Ifeanyi Onyebuchi, and Collins Ogwueze were also given credit for their displays.

“Now, we have options in defence, midfield, and the attack, and I am quite satisfied with the team’s output in the three matches,” Gusau added.

The international break has offered renewed hope as Nigeria continues its preparations for the 2025 AFCON qualifiers and the final phase of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification campaign.
