NFF vows to elevate national teams' performance in the coming year

The Nigeria Football Federation has vowed to undertake major reforms after issuing a public apology to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Nigerians following the Super Eagles’ failure to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Nigeria were beaten 4–3 on penalties by DR Congo in Sunday’s Africa Play-off Final in Rabat, confirming a second consecutive World Cup absence.

In a statement, the NFF expressed “profound sadness” over the setback and acknowledged the deep disappointment felt nationwide, stressing that football remains a powerful source of unity and pride for millions of Nigerians.

The Federation said players and staff fully understood the expectations placed on the team, revealing that the dressing room was filled with “pain and silence” after the defeat.

It also thanked the Federal Government, the National Sports Commission, the National Assembly, ministries, agencies, diplomatic partners, the media and supporters for their backing throughout the campaign.
