Former Super Eagles midfielder Christian Obodo has voiced strong concerns over the perceived undervaluation of Nigerian footballers in the global transfer market, using the stalled Premier League move of Victor Osimhen as a prime example.
Osimhen, 26, has enjoyed a stellar run in European football, winning league titles with Napoli and Galatasaray, and claiming the Golden Boot in both Serie A and the Turkish Süper Lig. Despite his undeniable credentials, a dream move to the English Premier League remains elusive.
Speaking to Brila FM, Obodo said financial demands were only part of the issue, pointing instead to deeper structural shortcomings in how Nigerian talent is marketed and supported globally.
“I know Osimhen would still like to play European football and achieve a lot, but the clause Napoli put on him and his wages are scaring clubs away,” Obodo began.

He then laid bare a cultural challenge holding back Nigeria’s top stars.
“Nigeria does not package their players well. If Osimhen were Brazilian, they [top European clubs] would have signed him. The way some Nigerians talk about their countrymen is not fair,” the ex-Fiorentina and Udinese midfielder added.
Osimhen recently rejected a massive £34 million-per-year salary offer from Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal, reaffirming his commitment to staying in Europe and testing himself at the highest level, most notably in the Premier League, where he has long been linked with the likes of Chelsea and Arsenal.
While clubs have expressed interest, Napoli’s €75 million release clause coupled with a hefty wage demand, has slowed negotiations.

Still, Obodo believes the lack of promotional backing and public support from Nigeria itself has also played a part.
“For me, it’s left for Osimhen to compromise if he wants to stay in Europe or take the money in Saudi Arabia. Whatever decision he makes, we just have to hope it’s not the wrong one.”
