Nigeria bids to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Abuja, aiming to become the first African host. The bid promises economic benefits.

Nigeria is on the brink of making history as the first African nation to host the Commonwealth Games, with Abuja officially entered as a candidate city for the 2030 edition.

The Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) confirmed it submitted an Expression of Interest before the March 28, 2025 deadline, following an executive meeting in Abuja on April 3.

However, the next step—a formal bid—can only proceed with full backing from the Federal Government.

According to Tony Nezianya, NOC’s Public Relations Officer, the bid presents a bold opportunity:

“Hosting the Commonwealth Games would allow Nigeria to showcase its development, elevate its global image, and energize the nation’s sporting culture.”

Nigeria last hosted a major multi-sport event in 2003—the All Africa Games (COJA)—also in Abuja. That experience highlighted the country’s capability to manage logistics, infrastructure, and hospitality at scale.
