Former welterweight champion Kamaru Usman returned to winning ways on Saturday night with a dominant unanimous decision victory over Joaquin Buckley in the main event of UFC on ESPN 69 in Atlanta.
Usman, nicknamed “The Nigerian Nightmare”, entered the octagon at State Farm Arena desperate to halt a three-fight slide that had cast doubt over his elite status.
In a tactical and physically commanding performance, the 37-year-old secured his first win since 2021, with judges scoring the fight 49-46, 49-46, and 48-47 in his favour.
Buckley, who had surged into contention on the back of a six-fight win streak—including a headline victory over Colby Covington—was unable to deal with Usman’s relentless pressure, grappling strength, and control on the mat.

From the opening bell, Usman (21-4 MMA, 16-3 UFC) looked sharp, dictating pace with well-placed left hands to the body and expertly timed takedowns.
The former champion neutralised Buckley’s power advantage by closing the distance, pressing him against the cage, and transitioning to half guard, where he landed short, punishing strikes.

By the end of the first round, Buckley was cut above the right eye and struggling to find rhythm. The pattern continued in round two, as Usman delivered front kicks, secured top control, and rained down elbows from dominant positions. While Buckley (22-7 MMA, 11-5 UFC) showcased heart, he could not consistently impose his striking game.

Although the third round saw some urgency from Buckley, who fended off takedowns and landed flurries, Usman’s composure and superior wrestling sealed the outcome.
It was a clear reminder of the skill set that once saw him dominate the division and defend his title five times.

Saturday’s result also elevated Usman into a tie for fourth-most welterweight wins in UFC history, alongside Vicente Luque (16), trailing only Neil Magny (22), Georges St-Pierre (19), Matt Hughes (17), and Matt Brown (17).
Usman, who last fought in October 2023, acknowledged the importance of the win. Buckley, gracious in defeat, praised Usman’s veteran savvy and hinted at returning stronger.
With the win, Usman steadies the course of his career and potentially re-enters the title conversation in a competitive welterweight division that remains wide open.
