Nigeria’s football Mecca to host 2024/2025 NWFL Premiership playoffs

The 2024/2025 NWFL Premiership Super Six Tournament will take place in Ikenne, Ogun State at the Remo Stars Stadium.

The Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) has officially confirmed Ikenne, Ogun State, as the host city for the 2024/2025 NWFL Premiership Super Six Tournament.

This marks the return of the six-team event to the South West region for the first time since the 2021 edition held in Ijebu Ode.

The tournament is set to take place from Thursday, May 8 to Sunday, May 17, 2025, at the Remo Stars Stadium, the home ground of Remo Stars Ladies.

The stadium, which has become Nigeria’s go-to football facility, has hosted key national team fixtures, including Super Falcons matches, Flamingos games, league matches, and age-grade competitions, thanks to its state-of-the-art facilities.

NWFL Chairperson, Ms. Nkechi Obi, expressed her excitement about the selection, stating, “On behalf of the board and management of the NWFL, I want to congratulate Ikenne and Ogun State for being chosen to host this year’s NWFL Premiership Super Six.”

She continued, “This is a significant opportunity to further energize the revival of women’s football in the state, which is fondly remembered for hosting the inaugural Women’s Africa Cup of Nations finals in 1998. It will also elevate the profile of women’s football across the country.”

Ms. Obi added, “Last year, we hosted the competition in Yenagoa, South-South, and now we’re excited to bring it to Ikenne in the South West, as part of our WomenFootballRising initiative to spread elite women’s football to every region of Nigeria.”

This will be the first time Ikenne hosts the NWFL Premiership playoffs, following a historic moment just two years ago when Remo Stars Ladies earned their promotion to the top tier at the same venue during the 2023 NWFL Championship.

The 2025 Super Six will be played in a round-robin format, with each of the six teams playing five matches. Teams are expected to arrive on Thursday, May 8, with the tournament draw and pre-match meeting scheduled for Friday, May 9.

Five clubs have already secured their places in the competition: Rivers Angels, Nasarawa Amazons, Bayelsa Queens, Edo Queens, and Remo Stars Ladies.

The final spot will be decided after the crucial Matchweek 14 encounter between Robo Queens and Naija Ratels on Wednesday, April 30, 2025.

The NWFL Premiership has produced different champions over the past four editions—Rivers Angels (2021), Bayelsa Queens (2022), Delta Queens (2023), and Edo Queens (2024).
