NNL blocks Akwa United, Heartland, other indebted clubs from 2025/26 Season

The Nigeria National League (NNL) has barred Akwa United, Heartland and other indebted clubs from registering for the 2025/26 season.

In a circular dated 9 September and signed by Chief Operating Officer Danlami Alanana, the NNL said clubs with unresolved debts to players, coaches or administrators will not be cleared.

Among those affected are former NPFL champions Akwa United, Heartland, Lobi Stars, Sunshine Stars and Gombe United all recently relegated from the topflight exception of Gombe.

Akwa United endured their worst campaign in club history, finishing 18th in the NPFL table. The Promise Keepers managed 12 wins, eight draws and 18 defeats in 38 matches.

Despite sacking Coach Babaganrau and rehiring Kennedy Boboye, who guided them to the 2021 league title, their struggles persisted. The Uyo-based club suffered twelve straight away losses, marking their longest losing streak on the road.

The NNL stressed that only clubs providing verifiable proof of compliance with Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) Players Status and Arbitration Committee rulings will be registered.

“Compliance is mandatory before clubs will be allowed to register,” the circular said.

The league body added that failure to comply could lead to exclusion from competition, warning that it would hurt the competitive and commercial profile of defaulting teams.

The NNL said the move underlines its commitment to protecting the rights of players and coaches while promoting financial discipline and professionalism.
