Obi Anthony receives Flying Eagles call-up ahead of 2025 AFCON

Granada midfielder Obi Anthony has received a call-up to the Flying Eagles squad ahead of the 2025 Africa’s U20 Cup of Nations. 

The midfielder, who joined the club lately last year from Moralo CP is expected to report for international duty in Katsina today.

The young dynamic midfielder, known for his flair and creativity, makes a significant leap from Spain’s fourth division to the competitive Segunda División. Obi, brimming with confidence and ambition.

Nigeria U20s coach Aliyu Zubairu will be in close touch to monitor his prowess this month with a view to inclusion in his squad for the tournament in Ivory Coast.

The U20 Afcon, set to take place from April 26 to May 18, 2025 in Ivory Coast, will feature thirteen teams competing for continental glory and four qualification spots for the Fifa U20 World Cup Chile 2025.

The Flying Eagles triumphed 1-0 over Egypt in the group stage during the last edition of the competition. Under the leadership of Aliyu Zubairu, the team will also square off against the Egyptians in a double-header friendly.

In preparation for the tournament, Nigeria played two friendly matches against the Young Elephants last month, securing a 2-0 victory in the first game but falling by the same margin in the second.

The 32-man squad was initially assembled in Egypt but will head to Qatar for a series of friendly matches.

Their campaign begins with a game against the host nation on March 19, followed by fixtures against the United Arab Emirates on March 22 and Croatia on March 26.

Scheduled to run from April 26 to May 18, the U20 AFCON also serves as a qualifier for the FIFA U20 World Cup.

The top four teams will secure a spot in the tournament, set to take place in Chile from September 27 to October 19.
