Onuachu handed Super Eagles lifeline after 17 months out

Super Eagles striker Onuachu leads Nigerian trio to victory as Trabzonspor edge Kocaelispor in opening Turkish Super Lig clash.

Trabzonspor striker Paul Onuachu is set to make his international return after being included in Nigeria’s provisional squad for this month’s 2026 World Cup playoff against Gabon.

The lanky striker has forced his way back into contention on the strength of his blistering form in Turkey, where he leads the scoring charts with seven goals in ten league appearances this season.

Nigeria’s head coach Eric Chelle has been under pressure to freshen his forward line after a string of underwhelming displays in recent qualifiers.

According to reports in the Turkish media French-born tactician has now turned to Onuachu, whose dominance in the air and efficiency inside the box could offer a tactical alternative to Victor Osimhen.

Onuachu’s last appearance for Nigeria came in June 2024, during a 2–1 defeat to Benin Republic. Since then, he had been left out of several squads amid questions about his international consistency.

But his performances for Trabzonspor this season have reignited his career.

The 6ft 7in forward has been directly involved in eight goals and earned Goal of the Month honours in September for a stunning overhead kick against Fatih Karagümrük, a strike that became symbolic of his turnaround.

At his club, the Nigerian has re-established himself as a fan favourite and dressing-room leader.

Trabzonspor vice-president Taner Fikret Saral hailed him as “a leader on and off the pitch,” presenting him with a personal award before their home fixture against Eyüpspor.

Officials from the Nigerian Football Federation have also been monitoring his progress closely, impressed by his movement, composure, and aerial prowess.

Onuachu’s potential return comes as Nigeria prepare for a decisive home clash against Gabon on 13 November, as part of their push to reach the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

While Chelle has yet to confirm his final 23-man list, the inclusion of Onuachu in the extended squad suggests renewed competition for attacking places and a chance for redemption for a striker once seen as surplus to requirements.
