Victor Osimhen says respect for his former manager was behind his decision not to celebrate after scoring the goal that sent Galatasaray into the last 16 of the UEFA Champions League.
The Nigerian forward struck in extra time as Galatasaray were beaten 3-2 on the night by Juventus at the Allianz Stadium, but progressed 7-5 on aggregate following their first-leg advantage in Istanbul.
Juventus reduced to 10 men yet leading 3-0 in Turin, the tie had swung dramatically. The Italian side were within reach of an unlikely comeback before Osimhen restored the visitors aggregate cushion early in extra time.

Instead of celebrating, he exchanged brief handshakes with team-mates, a reaction that quickly drew attention.
Speaking afterwards, Osimhen said his restraint was a mark of respect for Juventus head coach Luciano Spalletti, under whom he flourished at SSC Napoli during their Serie A title-winning campaign.
“No, I don’t need to, I don’t need to,” he said.
“I think it’s important to respect a man I love and who has played an important role in my career, I’m obviously talking about Spalletti. I didn’t feel the need to celebrate.”

Osimhen also admitted he was dissatisfied with Galatasaray’s overall display, despite securing their first Champions League last-16 appearance in 12 years.
“We played very poorly, even when they were a man down, so there was no reason to celebrate,” he added.
“Even when we had the opportunity to score the decisive goal, the one to make it 3-1, I didn’t feel the need to celebrate. I’m not that kind of player. I saw all these people applauding the Juventus players for their performance, and I can say I’m happy”
