Super Eagles of Nigeria quest for 2026 World Cup qualification regained momentum with a 2-0 win over Rwanda on matchday five, thanks to a brace from Victor Osimhen.
The Super Eagles entered the match under considerable pressure, sitting fifth in Group C and trailing the automatic qualification spot by five points after a winless start to their campaign.
Additionally, Nigeria hadn’t scored away to Rwanda in nearly two decades, adding to the stakes for new head coach Eric Chelle, who was leading the team for the first time after replacing Augustine Eguavoen earlier in the year.
The opening goal came from a well-executed free-kick by Ademola Lookman. Osimhen, making a well-timed run to the back post, capitalized on Lookman’s delivery and finished from close range to put Nigeria in front.

The Super Eagles were the dominant side both before and after the goal, Troost-Ekong had two chances from Lookman’s corners, while Rwanda’s goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari pulled off a brilliant save to deny Moses Simon.
Just before halftime, Osimhen doubled Nigeria’s lead. He intercepted the ball from his marker, raced through on goal, and calmly lifted the ball over Ntwari for a composed finish.

Although Rwanda had defeated Nigeria in their previous encounter last November, there would be no repeat this time. Nigeria saw out the remainder of the match comfortably, securing their first win of the qualification campaign.

This result, coupled with South Africa’s victory over Lesotho, saw Rwanda drop to third place in the group, while Nigeria moved up to fourth, just one point behind.
The Super Eagles will now turn their attention to a crucial matchup against Zimbabwe next week.
