The newly appointed Director General of the National Institute for Sports (NIS), Comrade Philip Shaibu, formally assumed office at the institute’s headquarters in Lagos, pledging to reposition the organisation.
The former Deputy Governor of Edo State was received by top management staff at the NIS headquarters, where he also met with directors and officially received handover notes from his predecessor, Professor Morolayo Fasakin, who was represented by Mrs Omonude.
Addressing the staff in his maiden remarks, Shaibu expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for the confidence reposed in him, stressing that his appointment was a call to duty.
“I have come here to work with you in line with the mandate of Mr. President,” he said. “Our business here is sports. The President has a vision for sports to take pride in Africa. We must train world-class coaches, athletes, and paramedics. I have come, and I must deliver.”

Shaibu, known for his deep involvement in sports even during his political career, emphasised the need for unity, collaboration, and a performance-driven culture at the institute.
“We must turn things around, all over the world, there is a shortage of paramedics, we must produce them. I believe in collective work. So, NIS must deliver on its mandate,” he said.
