The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has approved the Sam Okwaraji Secondary Schools Soccer Championship, a grassroots initiative designed to honour the legacy of the late Nigerian football hero.
The federation’s approval follows the endorsement of the Senate Committee on Sports Development, chaired by Senator Abdul Ningi.
An initiative of the Samuel Okwaraji Foundation, the competition is set to become an annual nationwide event aimed at promoting youth football development while immortalising Okwaraji, who tragically died in August 1989 during a FIFA World Cup qualifier against Angola at the National Stadium in Surulere, Lagos.

In a letter signed by Ruth David, Acting Director of Competitions, the NFF stated that the championship’s goals align with its youth and grassroots football commitment.

The federation commended the foundation’s vision and urged strict adherence to FIFA-approved rules throughout the competition.
Okwaraji, a lawyer and footballer educated in Rome, is remembered for his patriotic service to the national team. His selfless dedication to the Super Eagles (then Green Eagles) remains a powerful symbol of national pride and youth inspiration.

The inaugural edition of the championship is scheduled to kick off later this year.
