Senegal coach Pape Thiaw has defended his emotional reaction after a dramatic 2025 AFCON final win against Host Morocco

Senegal head coach Pape Thiaw has issued an emotional statement following the dramatic conclusion to the Africa Cup of Nations, insisting his actions were driven by passion for his country and a desire to protect his players.

In a message posted on Instagram, Thiaw reaffirmed his deep connection to Senegal, describing the nation as the foundation of his identity and motivation.

“For Senegal! My heart, my soul, my mind are anchored in this beautiful country that gave me everything and for him, I would do the impossible,” he wrote.

The coach reflected on what he described as a memorable tournament, while acknowledging the painful nature of its conclusion.

“We experienced an exceptional tournament with a magnificent organisation, which unfortunately ended in a dramatic ending.”

Thiaw addressed criticism surrounding his conduct, stressing that he had no intention of undermining the values of football.

“It was never my intention to go against the principles of the game that I love so much. I just tried to protect my players from injustice.”

He added that his response should be understood within the emotional context of the moment.

“What some will take as a violation of the rules is nothing more than an emotional reaction to the bias of the situation.”

According to Thiaw, discussions were held before play resumed, with a renewed determination to fight for the trophy.

“After consultation, we decided to resume the game and go and win this trophy for you.”

The Senegal coach also offered an apology to anyone who may have been offended by his actions.

“I apologise if I may have offended some people, but football lovers will understand that emotion is an integral part of this sport.”

Beyond the controversy, Thiaw’s coaching pedigree has been widely recognised. He previously managed Senegal’s A’ national team, a side restricted to players competing in the domestic league and led them to victory at the 2022 African Nations Championship (CHAN).

That success, combined with Senegal’s AFCON triumph under his leadership, made Thiaw the first coach to win both the CHAN and the Africa Cup of Nations. His AFCON-winning side went unbeaten throughout the tournament, recording six victories and one draw.

Since his appointment in 2024, Thiaw’s record stands at 21 matches, 17 wins, three draws and just one defeat, underlining his impact on the national team.

However, the events surrounding the AFCON final could yet have consequences. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has reportedly opened disciplinary proceedings against both Senegal and Thiaw, though a summary of jurisdiction and any potential sanctions has yet to be announced.

In his statement, Thiaw went on to thank Senegal’s political leadership, football authorities and supporters for their backing throughout the tournament.

“I would like to greet our President of the Republic and the Minister of Sports who put us in the best conditions, our Federation for its unwavering support, and our supporters who raised mountains with us.”

He also paid tribute to his family, highlighting their role in sustaining him throughout his journey.

“I could not have done all this without my family: my mother who is no longer of this world, my father, my wife and my children who give me an additional source of motivation.”
