The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has appointed Akeem Ishola Busari as head coach of Nigeria’s U-17 women’s team, the Nigeria women’s national under-17 football team.
His appointment, confirmed on 2 April 2026, comes at a crucial time as Nigeria prepares for qualification for the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.
Here are six key things we know about the new Flamingos coach:
1. He replaces a history-making predecessor
Busari takes over from Bankole Olowookere, who led Nigeria to a historic bronze medal at the 2022 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup. That achievement significantly raised expectations around the team.
2. Immediate focus is World Cup qualification
His first assignment is guiding Nigeria through the 2026 qualifiers. After a first-round bye, the Flamingos will face either Niger Republic or Guinea in May, with tougher rounds expected later in July.
3. He must rebuild a youthful squad
At U-17 level, squad turnover is constant. Busari is expected to identify and develop a new generation of players while maintaining Nigeria’s competitiveness on the continental stage.
4. Extensive domestic coaching experience
Busari has managed several Nigerian clubs, including Shooting Stars, Crown FC, Gateway United and Bayelsa Queens. Notably, he helped Shooting Stars secure promotion to the top flight during the 2008/2009 season.
5. Strong background in women’s football
Before his national team appointment, he served as Technical Adviser at Pacesetter Queens and previously worked as Technical Director at Bayelsa Queens, reinforcing his credentials in the women’s game.
6. Recognised for attacking philosophy and development work
A CAF A-licensed coach, Busari is known for a high-pressing, attacking style. Beyond match tactics, he has contributed to grassroots development as a training officer with the Lagos State Coaches Association.

His task now extends beyond results. After a disappointing round-of-16 exit at the last World Cup, he is expected to restore confidence, develop talent and ensure the Flamingos remain a pipeline for Nigeria’s senior women’s team.
