Stellenbosch and Simba SC make history with CAF Confederation Cup semi-final berths

Stellenbosch FC and Simba SC made history by booking their places in the CAF Confederation Cup semi-finals.

Stellenbosch secured a landmark 1-0 victory over Egyptian giants Zamalek at the Cairo International Stadium, while Simba completed a dramatic comeback to defeat Al Masry, progressing after a penalty shootout.

In Cairo, Stellenbosch FC stunned the hosts with a clinical performance. Sihle Nduli’s powerful strike from a Lesiba Nku pass in the second half sealed the win, sending the South African side into their first-ever CAF Confederation Cup semi-final.

Despite limited fan attendance due to sanctions on Zamalek, the White Knights had overwhelming support, but Stellenbosch’s disciplined defence and clinical counter-attacks proved too much.

The Western Cape side now joins South African powerhouses Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates in reaching the latter stages of African club competitions cementing their place among the continent’s elite.

In another thrilling quarterfinal clash, Simba SC completed a remarkable comeback to knock out Egypt’s Al Masry in Dar es Salaam.

Trailing 2-0 from the first leg, the Tanzanian giants won 2-0 on the night through goals from Elie Mpanzu and Steven Mukwala, levelling the aggregate score.

With extra time failing to produce a winner, Simba triumphed 4-2 on penalties, thanks to two crucial saves from goalkeeper Camara. The Benjamin Mkapa Stadium erupted in celebration as Simba advanced to the semi-finals, keeping Tanzania’s continental dream alive.

For their efforts in scoring two goals against Al Masry, Simba SC will be awarded approximately $7,600 from the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, H.E Samia Suluhu, as part of a pledge he made at the start of their African campaign.

In a further historic milestone, Simba’s coach, Fadlu Davids, became the first manager to guide the club to a semi-final in any CAF Inter-Club Competition.

Davids, a South African coach will lead his team to his home town Cape Town as the will face Stellenbosch in the Semi final.

Both teams now stand on the brink of African club football glory, advancing to the semi-finals and making their mark on the competition.
