Sudan boss Appiah ridicules Eric Chelle and staff post-CHAN win

A distraught Eric Chelle admits costly errors as his Super Chickens crash out of CHAN 2024, conceding five goals without scoring.

Sudan head coach Kwesi Appiah says Nigeria’s CHAN 2024 team “is not bad” but needs “tactical improvement” following their 4-0 victory in Zanzibar.

The result saw Eric Chelle’s Super Eagles B side eliminated from the 2024 African Nations Championship after two defeats in as many games.

“I wasn’t expecting that scoreline,” Appiah said. “I knew we could beat Nigeria but not by that margin. The Nigerian team is not bad. They just need tactical improvements”

Reflecting on the match, the former Ghana coach explained his team’s approach:

“We knew it would be a tough game, especially the first 20 minutes. We had to absorb the pressure from Nigeria and played them on the counter. Our level was much better than our previous performance against Congo.”

Sudan capitalised on Nigerian defensive errors to lead 2-0 at half-time, with Leonard Ngenge scoring an own goal and conceding a penalty converted by Walieldin Khidir.

Home based Super Eagles under Eric Chelle have been horrible at CHAN 2024.

Second-half strikes from Mohamed Yagoub and Abdelrahman Khalifa completed the rout, leaving Nigeria bottom of their group without a point and a goal difference of -5.

Appiah praised his players’ discipline but hinted that Nigeria’s problems lay on the touchline rather than on the pitch.
