Mamelodi Sundowns released a statement concerning the violent clash between their supporters and fans of Tunisian club Esperance at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Tuesday, 1 April.
The clash occurred after the final whistle blew in the CAF Champions League quarter-final, which the home team won 1-0.
The incident occurred a day before another bloody brawl at Cape Town Stadium on Wednesday when Stellenbosch FC faced off against Egypt’s Zamalek.

In a statement on their X account, Mamelodi Sundowns management stated that they were “deeply saddened by the unruly behaviour” of soccer supporters of their own club and their Esperance rivals.

In the release statement: “… in accordance with our African culture of compassion and empathy (our African culture of Ubuntu) we are required to apologize to Espérance de Tunis and its supporters as the unruly behaviour took place at our home stadium, despite the videos and facts indicating that the Sundowns supporters did not initiate the unruly behaviour”.
Sundowns sit top of Betway Premiership with 58 points after 23 games, while Espérance leading Tunisia‘s Ligue Professionnelle 1. Both teams have won this tournament in recent years – Sundowns in 2016 and Espérance for the fourth time in 2019.
