Super Eagles assistant coach defends tactical call in draw against Zimbabwe

Super Eagles assistant coach Fidelis Ilechukwu has defended Chelle’s decision to maintain the attacking setup after Victor Osimhen’s sub.

Super Eagles assistant coach Fidelis Ilechukwu has defended head coach Eric Chelle’s decision to maintain the defensive setup after Victor Osimhen’s substitution in Nigeria’s 1-1 draw with Zimbabwe during their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier in Uyo on Tuesday, March 25th.

Osimhen’s departure saw Chelle opt for an attacking change instead of shoring up the defence, a move that drew criticism from some Nigerian football fans.

Many believed a defensive substitution could have helped the Super Eagles hold on for a crucial victory.

Addressing the criticism in an interview with Lagos Talks 91.3, Ilechukwu justified the decision, emphasizing the team’s attacking philosophy and confidence in their defensive structure.

“This is a team that created nearly eight or nine chances but failed to convert them. The coach made his decision based on our style of play and team cohesion. We all stand together on this,” Ilechukwu explained.

He further highlighted that the team expected to score more goals and did not anticipate conceding.

“We believed we would score at least two goals. The focus was on attacking, and we didn’t expect Zimbabwe to break through and score.”

Ilechukwu also pointed out that dominating chances does not always translate to victory, citing Rangers as an example.

“It’s part of football. Just like Rangers yesterday, we lost despite creating more than nine chances. The coach has our full support, and we are committed to qualification. The opportunity is still there, and we must seize it.”
