Super Eagles receive promised houses nearly two years after AFCON final

Federal Government of Nigeria has fulfilled its long-standing pledge to reward members of the Super Eagles’ silver-medal-winning squad at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations with housing gifts.

The development was confirmed on Monday in Fez, Morocco, through the National Sports Commission (NSC), nearly two years after the tournament and on the eve of Nigeria’s opening match at the 2025 AFCON.

The Super Eagles, coached at the time by Jose Peseiro, finished runners-up at the 2023 finals held in Côte d’Ivoire between January and February 2024, losing 2–1 to the host nation in the final.

Following the team’s return to Nigeria after the tournament, President Bola Tinubu conferred national honours on players and officials, awarding them the Member of the Order of the Niger (MON) and Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON), alongside promises of houses and land allocations.

That housing commitment has now been completed, with the documentation finalised while the team is camped in Morocco for the 2025 tournament.

“The Federal Government, through the NSC, has fulfilled its 2024 pledge on housing rewards to the Super Eagles,” the team’s media officer, Promise Efoghe, confirmed.

Nigeria begin their Group C campaign against Tanzania, before facing Tunisia and Uganda in subsequent matches. The three-time champions last lifted the AFCON trophy in 2013, having previously won in 1980 and 1994.

The national team failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, scheduled to be held in the United States, Canada and Mexico, increasing pressure for a strong showing in Morocco.

President Tinubu also extended similar honours to other national teams in recent months, including the Super Falcons following their 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations triumph, and the women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, after securing a fifth consecutive AfroBasket title.
