Nigeria’s Super Eagles hopes of reaching the 2026 World Cup suffered another setback as they were held to a 1-1 draw by South Africa in Bloemfontein.
The Super Eagles needed victory to strengthen their qualification chances, but Calvin Bassey’s first international goal only salvaged a point after an own goal from William Troost-Ekong had put Bafana Bafana ahead.
The hosts made the brighter start at the Free State Toyota Stadium, pressing high and controlling possession. Nigeria suffered an early blow when defender Ola Aina limped off, replaced by Bright Osayi-Samuel.
South Africa’s pressure eventually told in the 24th minute when a dangerous cross forced Troost-Ekong into an own goal, sending the home fans into celebrations.
Despite the setback, Nigeria grew into the contest and were rewarded just before half-time. Bassey climbed highest to meet Fisayo Dele-Bashiru’s cross, heading home to silence the crowd and level the score.

Coach Eric Chelle introduced Tolu Arokodare for Cyriel Dessers after the break, and the Wolves striker almost made an immediate impact with a shot narrowly wide.
South Africa came close themselves with a spectacular long-range effort that flew just over with goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali stranded. Nigeria pressed hard for a winner, with Samuel Chukwueze and Chrisantus Uche brought on to add attacking threat. Ademola Lookman also had a chance but failed to control inside the box.
