The Super Falcons, Nigeria’s women’s national football team, have received a significant boost ahead of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco with University of Connecticut forward Chioma Okafor, a 20-year-old Malawi-born star with a Nigerian father, has committed to representing Nigeria internationally.
Okafor’s decision comes after discussions with both the Nigerian and Malawian football associations.
The Football Association of Malawi (FAM) confirmed her choice, stating that she had confirmed her commitment to play for Nigeria following discussions with her parents and formal communication from the Nigeria Football Federation.

Chioma Okafor is a talented forward who has been making waves in the US college football scene. Born to a Nigerian father and a Malawian mother, Okafor grew up playing football on dusty pitches in Malawi, where opportunities for young girls were scarce.

Despite the challenges, she persevered and eventually moved to the United States for school. At Berkshire School in Massachusetts, Okafor lit up the high school football scene, guiding her team to playoff appearances and catching the attention of college scouts.
Okafor earned a scholarship at the University of Connecticut (UConn), where she quickly became a standout performer. She was named to both the All-BIG EAST Second Team and the All-BIG EAST Freshman Team in 2022.
A year later, she earned national recognition as an NSCAA Third Team All-American, known for her pace, intelligent movement, and clinical finishing.

Okafor’s inclusion in the Super Falcons squad is seen as a timely acquisition, as the team aims to reclaim their continental title.
