Team Nigeria depart for World Athletics Championships in Tokyo

Team Nigeria head to Tokyo for the 2025 World Athletics Championships, with Tobi Amusan, Ese Brume leading the team.

Nigeria’s contingent of athletes and officials will depart the country today (Tuesday) for the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan.

The competition begins on Saturday, 13 September, with some US-based athletes already in Japan ahead of the squad.

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria last week unveiled a 15-athlete roster comprising seven women and eight men.

Leading the team is 100m hurdles world record holder and 2022 world champion Tobi Amusan, aiming to rediscover her best form. She is joined by Olympic and world finalist Chukwuebuka Enekwechi in the shot put.

Also included is 22-year-old 400m hurdler Ezekiel Nathaniel, who has enjoyed a breakthrough season in 2025.

Nathaniel broke Nigeria’s national record five times this year, with a best of 47.31 seconds in Silesia the fifth-fastest in the world this season.

The sprinter has also impressed in the 200m, posting a season’s best of 20.17 seconds to rank as Nigeria’s top athlete in the event, and is set for his second Diamond League appearance in Zurich.

Long jump star Ese Brume, the African record holder with a leap of 7.17m, also makes the list, alongside fellow jumper Prestina Ochonogor and discus thrower Chioma Onyekwere-Lyons.

Other names include Samuel Ogazi (400m), Kayinsola Ajayi (100m), Obiageri Amaechi (discus), Charles Godfred (long jump), Rosemary Chukwuma (100m), Oyesade Olatoye (hammer), Israel Okon (100m), and Chidi Okezie (400m).

Amusan remains the only Nigerian to have ever won a world title, courtesy of her record-breaking run in Oregon in 2022.

Tokyo has been a successful stage for Brume in the past, raising hopes of another medal-winning performance.
