Ten-man Mali edge Tunisia on penalties to reach AFCON quarter-finals

Ten-man Mali defied a numerical disadvantage to book their place in the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) quarter-finals, beating Tunisia 3-2 on penalties after a dramatic 1-1 draw.

The Eagles advanced despite playing more than an hour with 10 men and will now face holders Senegal in the last eight, while Tunisia failed to reach the quarter-finals for just the second time in the last six AFCON editions.

The match began at a frantic and ill-tempered pace, with indiscipline overshadowing attacking quality. Referee Abongile Tom brandished four yellow cards in the opening 25 minutes before producing a red card for Mali defender Woyo Coulibaly, who went in high on Hannibal Mejbri.

Coulibaly’s dismissal meant Mali became the team with the most red cards across the last three AFCON tournaments, with four sendings-off in that period.

Tunisia dominated possession but struggled to turn control into clear chances. Djigui Diarra was rarely troubled before half-time, as the Eagles of Carthage failed to test the Mali goalkeeper despite seeing plenty of the ball.

The pattern continued after the restart, although Mali began to pose more of a threat on the counter-attack following the introduction of Dorgeles Nene, with the Fenerbahce forward firing over from distance.

Tunisia finally registered the first shot on target when Hannibal’s free kick was pushed away by Diarra, who was quickly called into action again to deny Elias Saad moments later.

Sami Trabelsi’s side appeared to have found the breakthrough late on. In the closing minutes of normal time, Saad floated a cross over the Mali defence and Aimen Chaouat was left unmarked to nod into the bottom corner past the helpless Diarra.

But Mali were handed a lifeline deep into stoppage time when Yassine Meriah was penalised for handball. Lassine Sinayoko kept his nerve to slot the penalty beyond Aymen Dahmen and force extra time, as heavy rain began to fall and disrupt the flow of the game.

Extra time brought few clear chances. Meriah went closest with a long-range effort, while Tunisia had the ball in the net in the second period, only for Chaouat to be ruled offside.

Penalties followed for the first time at this AFCON, with both teams trading goals and misses through the opening rounds. Diarra then emerged as the hero, making his second save of the shootout to deny Mohamed Ali Ben Romdhane.

El Bilal Touré made no mistake with Mali’s fifth penalty, sealing victory and sparking celebrations among the Malian players.
