Three exciting young forwards eligible to represent Nigeria have been included in the prestigious 100-player shortlist for the 2025 Golden Boy Award, recognising the world’s best under-21 footballers.

The annual award, presented by Italian publication Tuttosport, has long been a barometer for future superstars, with past winners including Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé, and Erling Haaland. Nigerian Prospects in the Spotlight

Ethan Nwaneri (Arsenal, 8th)

The 18-year-old Hale End Academy graduate enjoyed a breakout season with the Gunners, netting nine goals and providing two assists in 37 appearances across all competitions.

His composure and technical ability have drawn comparisons to Arsenal legends, making him one of the highest-ranked Nigerians on the list.

Tyrique George (Chelsea, 41st)

After earning a permanent promotion to Chelsea’s first team, the 19-year-old winger made an immediate impact with seven goal contributions in 24 matches. His performances have been crucial for the Blues, particularly in their run to the UEFA Conference League final.

George Ilenikhena (Monaco, 96th)

Born in Lagos, the 18-year-old striker showcased his potential with six goals and two assists for Monaco this season. His physicality and clinical finishing have made him one to watch in European football.

While Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal remains the most talked-about young talent in world football, the 17-year-old is ineligible to win again after claiming the award in 2024. The current frontrunners include Barcelona’s Pau Cubarsí, PSG duo Désiré Doué and Warren Zaïre-Emery, and Arsenal’s Myles Lewis-Skelly.

Eligibility and Future Prospects

To qualify for the Golden Boy Award, nominees must have been born in 2004 or later and play in one of UEFA’s top 25 leagues. For Nigeria, the inclusion of Nwaneri, George, and Ilenikhena highlights the depth of emerging talent available to the Super Eagles, should they choose to represent the nation at senior level.

With the winner set to be announced later this year, Nigerian football fans will be watching closely—hoping that one of these rising stars not only claims the Golden Boy title but also dons the green and white in the near future.
