Tobi Amusan secures Nigeria’s first World Championships medal in three years

Nigeria’s Tobi Amusan staged a thrilling comeback to win silver in the women’s 100m hurdles at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, finishing in 12.29 seconds on Monday.

Amusan struggled out of the blocks but closed a significant gap in the latter stages of the race, narrowly missing out on a second world title.

Switzerland’s Ditaji Kambundji claimed gold in a national record of 12.24 seconds, just 0.05 seconds ahead, while Grace Stark of the United States finished third in 12.34 seconds.

Earlier in the day, Amusan had qualified for the final with a time of 12.36 seconds in the semifinals.

She remains the current world record holder in the 100m hurdles, having set 12.12 seconds at the 2022 World Championships in Eugene, Oregon, becoming Nigeria’s first-ever world champion and world record holder in athletics.

Amusan is also the reigning Commonwealth and African champion in the 100m hurdles and a two-time African Games champion.

Her silver medal in Tokyo marks Nigeria’s first medal at the World Championships in three years, reinforcing her status as the ‘Toby Express’.

In a dramatic finish, Kambundji’s record-breaking run denied Amusan a second world title, but the Nigerian hurdler’s performance showcased resilience, determination, and her world-class talent on the global stage.
