Uche stunner fires Crystal Palace into Conference League Playoffs

Super Eagles midfielder Christantus Uche was the standout performer as Crystal Palace secured a UEFA Conference League playoff place, following a 2-2 draw against Finnish side KuPS at Selhurst Park on Thursday night.

Uche, who has largely featured in advanced midfield or support roles this season, was handed a rare start in attack by manager Oliver Glasner for Palace’s final group-stage fixture. The tactical gamble paid immediate dividends.

Just six minutes into the contest, the Nigerian produced a moment of brilliance, collecting a pass from Justin Devenny inside the penalty area before curling a sublime outside-of-the-boot effort beyond the KuPS goalkeeper to open the scoring.

Crystal Palace dominated much of the first half and created several opportunities to extend their lead, but wastefulness in front of goal kept the visitors in contention. There was a brief scare when Uche went down holding his hamstring, though the 21-year-old recovered quickly and continued the match.

The second half told a different story. KuPS stunned the home side with two goals inside the opening eight minutes, capitalising on Palace’s lapse in concentration to turn the game on its head.

With qualification hanging in the balance, Palace pushed forward and were eventually rewarded in the 77th minute, when Devenny struck the equaliser to restore parity and calm nerves inside Selhurst Park.

Uche was substituted shortly after, making way for Jean-Philippe Mateta, having delivered a strong all-round display. The Getafe loanee registered two shots, two successful dribbles, and 36 touches, underlining his growing influence in the side.

Although the draw meant Palace finished 10th in the Conference League standings, missing out on automatic qualification for the round of 16, the result was enough to secure a place in the playoff round. Victory in that tie would see the Eagles advance to the last 16 of the competition.
