Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface played a pivotal role in Bayer Leverkusen’s 3-1 victory over Bochum at the BayArena on Friday.
Following a limited role during Nigeria’s recent 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers, where he featured for just nine minutes across two matches, Boniface returned to club action determined to make an impact.
Leverkusen head coach Xabi Alonso made an unexpected tactical adjustment, pairing Boniface with Czech striker Patrik Schick in the attack.
The hosts took an early lead in the 20th minute through Aleix Garcia, but their advantage was short-lived as Felix Passlack equalized for Bochum six minutes later.

Bochum then adopted a defensive approach, sitting deep and relying on counterattacks, which limited Leverkusen’s offensive opportunities in the first half. Boniface managed only one attempt on goal during the opening 45 minutes.

However, the second half saw a shift in momentum. Leverkusen increased their intensity and regained the lead in the 60th minute when Boniface capitalized on a precise low cross from Jeremie Frimpong following a corner. The Nigerian forward expertly guided the ball into the net from close range, putting his team back in control.
Substitute Amin Adli later secured the victory with an 87th-minute goal, ensuring a 3-1 win for Leverkusen and further strengthening their position in the Bundesliga standings.
