We had a team, now it’s just names– Obafemi Martins calls out Super Eagles lack of unity

Former Super Eagles striker Obafemi Martins has voiced his concerns over what he sees as a major problem with the current Nigerian national team —a lack of genuine teamwork.

In a candid interview with Football Fans Tribe, Martins, who featured for top clubs like Inter Milan, Newcastle United, and VfL Wolfsburg during his career, said that while today’s Super Eagles squad is full of big names, they are missing the cohesion that once defined the team.

“Back then, we had a team,” Martins said. “Now, the names are there, but the team is not. Osimhen is doing well as a striker, Lookman is doing well too, but we need to play together as a team to win.”

Martins, now 40, scored 18 goals in 42 appearances for Nigeria and was known for his blistering pace and sharp finishing. But according to him, individual brilliance isn’t enough — not even from stars like Victor Osimhen or Ademola Lookman.

“Osimhen can score 100 goals, but if we don’t move forward, it’s like the goals mean nothing,” he added, emphasizing the importance of unity and collective play.

The Super Eagles have come under heavy criticism in recent months following a string of underwhelming performances in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, including a disappointing draw against Zimbabwe.

With four qualifiers remaining, Nigeria faces growing pressure to turn things around. The next test will be against Rwanda at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo, where all eyes will be on whether the team can come together and deliver.

Like many fans, Martins believes that rekindling the spirit of togetherness is essential if the Super Eagles hope to book their ticket to the 2026 World Cup.

“Football is a team sport,” he said. “Talent alone won’t take us there.”
