Hamburg SV Sporting Director Claus Costa has explained the club’s decision to bring in Super Eagles centre-back Jordan Torunarigha, highlighting the defender’s blend of experience, physicality, and tactical fit.
Torunarigha, who recently switched allegiance from Germany to Nigeria, completed a medical and signed a three-year contract with the newly promoted Bundesliga side earlier this week.
The 27-year-old joins Hamburg as a free agent following the expiration of his contract with Belgian side KAA Gent.
Speaking to reporters, Costa said the decision to sign the Nigerian international was based on a thorough evaluation of his performances and personality.
“Jordan has established himself as a key player and top performer at Gent,” Costa said. “We’ve been closely monitoring his development both on and off the pitch, and we’re excited that he sees his future with HSV.”
The Hamburg director emphasized Torunarigha’s strong defensive profile and his ability to play a key role in the club’s return to top-flight German football.

Jordan is a clear-headed, professional, and mature individual. His progress in recent years has been remarkable. He combines excellent speed with strong aerial and tackling abilities,” he added.
“With his defensive stability and his ability to contribute to our build-up play, Jordan perfectly fits our tactical needs.”
Torunarigha brings with him nearly 300 senior appearances and international experience from Germany’s youth ranks before pledging to represent Nigeria in 2023.

His signing is seen as a statement of intent by HSV, who are aiming to consolidate their position in the Bundesliga after a seven-year absence.
