Former Nigeria international Victor Ikpeba says Calvin Bassey’s recent absence from Fulham’s starting line-up is likely linked to fitness management following a demanding run of fixtures.
The Super Eagles defender has not started a Premier League match since returning from the Africa Cup of Nations, despite being an ever-present for Fulham before leaving for international duty.
Bassey was again named among the substitutes as Marco Silva’s side lost 3-2 to Manchester United at Old Trafford, coming on late in the contest as Fulham searched for an equaliser.

Speaking on SuperSport’s Monday Night Football, Ikpeba suggested the decision reflected the physical demands placed on modern players rather than a loss of form.
“Maybe fatigue, maybe he had some issues,” Ikpeba said.
“These players are not machines. Sometimes the manager feels a player needs a breather.”

Bassey featured in every league game for Fulham prior to AFCON and has been one of Silva’s most reliable performers this season, operating mainly at centre-back but also covering at left-back when required.

Ikpeba added that the congested fixture schedule often forces managers to rotate, particularly with players returning from international tournaments.

“The games are coming very quickly,” he said. “Sometimes players need short breaks to recover properly.”
