Why Victor Osimhen may remain at Napoli next season despite request to leave the club

Former Super Eagles midfielder Christian Obodo says poor player branding is why Victor Osimhen hasn't secured a Premier League move

Latest reports suggests that Napoli may retain Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen till next summer despite heavy interest from top European clubs.

Napoli manager Antonio Conte has asked the club hierarchy to keep Osimhen if no club matches their €75 million release clause.

Conte believes Osimhen can spearhead Napoli’s bid for a first-ever UEFA Champions League title under his reign. This move could be a significant change in fortunes for Osimhen, whose relationship with Napoli soured last summer, prompting his temporary exit.

Osimhen’s loan to Galatasaray proved to be a huge success, with the striker scoring 37 goals and providing eight assists in the Super Lig. He helped Galatasaray secure a domestic double and was crowned the league’s top scorer.

His impressive form sparked interest from top clubs across Europe, including Liverpool, Manchester United, Juventus, PSG, and Real Madrid.

However, Napoli’s attempts to secure alternatives to Osimhen have stalled, with moves for Udinese star Lorenzo Lucca and Liverpool’s Darwin Núñez failing to materialize. This has led the club to reconsider their stance on Osimhen’s future.

One potential hurdle to Osimhen’s return to Napoli is his wage demand. The striker is reportedly seeking a €12 million annual salary, which could be a challenge for Napoli to meet.

However, if the club and Osimhen can find common ground, he could yet lead Conte’s attack into a new era.

Conte’s confidence in Osimhen’s abilities is a significant factor in the club’s decision to retain the striker. The Italian tactician believes that Osimhen can make a crucial difference in Napoli’s quest for European success.

Liverpool were reportedly exploring a swap deal involving Darwin Núñez, but no formal agreement has been reached. The Reds are still interested in signing Osimhen, but Napoli’s decision to retain him could scupper their plans.
