Zambia vs Nigeria: Cooper Queens Banda issues rallying cry ahead of Super Falcons clash

Zambia captain Barbra Banda has issued a passionate rallying cry ahead of today’s Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) quarter-final against Nigeria.

Speaking confidently during the team’s pre-match press conference in Casablanca, Banda stressed that while Zambia respects Nigeria’s pedigree as nine-time champions, her side will not be overawed by the occasion.

“We are not scared, but we respect them because we know the game is 90-plus minutes, we are going to speak on the pitch,” said Banda.

“We want to hunt it. Like the coaches say, we are so hungry for the game. You will be there to witness. It’s a good game for everyone to watch.”

The Copper Queens famously defeated Nigeria 1-0 in the third-place match at the 2022 edition their first-ever victory over the West African powerhouse.

Now under the leadership of coach Nora Häuptle and inspired by the dynamic attacking duo of Banda and Racheal Kundananji, Zambia is targeting a return to the semi-finals.

Banda, the reigning CAF Women’s Player of the Year, revealed that she carries no pressure despite the expectations on her shoulders.

“It’s not pressure, it’s motivation. I just have to work extra hard and more titles will come. I’m here to show why I’ve earned this badge.”

The 24-year-old forward also underlined the importance of team spirit and values, crediting Zambia’s success to unity and discipline.

“We love what we do and that’s to play as one, stay honest to our values, and give everything in every match. That’s the message I’m sharing with the team.”
