2026 WCQ: Super Eagles hold first training session in South Africa

The Super Eagles of Nigeria held their first training session on Tuesday evening in Polokwane, South Africa, as preparations intensified ahead of their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying clash against Lesotho.

Seventeen players took part in the session, while the remaining players are expected to arrive at camp later tonight to complete the squad.

Those who trained include African Player of the Year Ademola Lookman, Victor Osimhen, William Troost-Ekong, Wilfred Ndidi, Alex Iwobi, Samuel Chukwueze, Calvin Bassey, Moses Simon, Terem Moffi, Frank Onyeka, Tolu Arokodare, Bruno Onyemaechi, Chrisantus Uche, Semi Ajayi, and goalkeepers Stanley Nwabali, Adebayo Adeleye, and Amas Obasogie.

The players went through light physical and tactical drills under the supervision of the technical crew, who had arrived earlier to set up camp in Polokwane.

Team officials described the opening session as lively and focused, with the players settling in quickly and showing sharpness despite their varying arrival times.

Another session is scheduled for Wednesday morning as the team steps up tactical work ahead of Friday’s must-win fixture against Lesotho.

The full complement of players is expected in camp before the next workout.

Nigeria currently sit third in Group C of the CAF World Cup qualifying series with 11 points from eight matches. The Super Eagles must win their remaining games and hope for favourable results from South Africa and Benin Republic to keep their qualification hopes alive.

The encounter against Lesotho, set for Friday in Polokwane, will be crucial for the three-time African champions as they push to strengthen their qualification chances.
