Nigeria’s Flying Eagles will renew their long-standing rivalry with Argentina when both sides meet on Wednesday in the Round of 16 of the 2025 FIFA U20 World Cup in Chile.
The fixture, set for the Estadio Nacional in Santiago, brings together two football-loving nations whose youth-level clashes have produced some of the tournament’s most dramatic moments.
This will be their third meeting at U20 level Argentina claimed victory in 2005, Nigeria struck back in 2023 and now the series stands delicately balanced at one win each.
A Rivalry Rooted in History
Their first showdown came in 2005 in the Netherlands, a final remembered for Lionel Messi’s brilliance. The then 18-year-old converted two penalties as Argentina edged Samson Siasia’s spirited Nigerian team 2–1.

The Flying Eagles, featuring Mikel Obi, Taye Taiwo, and Chinedu Obasi, had fought through a tough group to reach the final but fell just short against a star-studded Albiceleste side.

Eighteen years later, the story flipped. At the 2023 edition in Argentina, Ladan Bosso’s young Nigerians stunned the hosts 2–0 in San Juan, with Ibrahim Beji Muhammad and Rilwan Sarki scoring to seal a famous win that silenced the home crowd.

That victory remains one of Nigeria’s proudest U20 World Cup moments, a performance built on defensive discipline, clinical finishing, and unshakeable belief.
Form Guide: Contrasting Paths to the Knockout Stage
Heading into this year’s Round of 16, Argentina look the more dominant force. Under coach Diego Placente a former U20 World Cup winner himself, the South Americans have been ruthless in Group D, winning all three matches.
They beat Cuba 3–1, thrashed Australia 4–1, and edged Italy 1–0, scoring eight goals and conceding just twice. Forward Alejo Sarco leads the tournament’s scoring charts with three goals.
Nigeria’s journey has been less smooth. Aliyu Zubairu’s side struggled in Group B, managing only one win in three matches. The Flying Eagles lost to Norway, edged Saudi Arabia 3–2 through a late penalty, and drew 1–1 with Colombia.
Their goals have mostly come from set-pieces, with captain Daniel Bameyi scoring twice from the spot.

Nigeria will be without key forward Sani Suleiman, who is suspended after picking up two yellow cards. His absence leaves Zubairu with limited attacking options, though Tahir Maigana and Ibrahim Muhammad are expected to start.
Argentina, meanwhile, are at full strength. Placente is likely to keep faith with his front trio of Sarco, Luka Romero, and Máximo Perrone, who have combined well in the group stage.
What to Expect
On paper, Argentina’s free-flowing attack and technical sharpness make them clear favourites. But Nigeria’s unpredictability, physicality, and history of upsetting the odds give this tie an edge.
The Flying Eagles’ defensive resilience will be crucial, as will their ability to convert limited chances something that proved decisive in their 2023 win.
