BREAKING NEWS: Nigeria’s Samson Adamu set to replace Mosengo-Omba as CAF General Secretary

Nigeria’s Samson Adamu is poised to take on one of the most influential roles in African football, as he looks set to replace Véron Mosengo-Omba as the new General Secretary of the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

According to African football journalist Micky Jnr, CAF President and the organisation’s Executives are currently in final discussions about appointing the young Nigerian administrator, who has worked his way up through the CAF structure.

Adamu, who currently serves as CAF’s Director of Competitions, has earned significant respect for his behind-the-scenes work in managing the logistics of major continental tournaments such as the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the CAF Champions League, and the Confederation Cup.

His appointment, though not yet confirmed, is seen by many as a strategic move for CAF as it continues its ongoing efforts to reform and improve its leadership.

However, the potential elevation of Adamu to the General Secretary role is bound to stir renewed debate, with his family name and the controversy surrounding his father — inextricably linked to his rise.

Samson Adamu is the son of Dr. Amos Adamu, the former FIFA Executive Committee member who was banned from football following a corruption scandal in 2010.

Dr. Adamu was suspended by FIFA’s Ethics Committee after an undercover investigation by The Sunday Times exposed his attempts to solicit bribes in exchange for votes in the World Cup bidding process.

Though Amos Adamu did not vote in the controversial selection of Russia and Qatar as World Cup hosts, the scandal severely tarnished his legacy and saw him stripped of his positions within both FIFA and CAF.

Further scrutiny of the Adamu name arose in 2014 when FIFA’s investigation included allegations that Qatar’s 2022 World Cup bid team paid $1 million to sponsor an “African Legends Dinner” in Johannesburg, which was linked to Samson Adamu.

Although no direct evidence was found to implicate him personally, the allegations  combined with his father’s questionable past have raised questions about governance within African football.

Despite these lingering shadows, Samson Adamu has established a strong reputation within CAF. His role in managing CAF’s competitions and organising high-profile tournaments has demonstrated his competence and professionalism.

It’s this track record that many believe qualifies him for the General Secretary role, which carries significant responsibility in overseeing the organisation’s day-to-day operations and its broader governance.
