Super Falcons and Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Jennifer Echegini says she is embracing the weight of expectation as she prepares for her debut at the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) with Nigeria.
The 24-year-old has already featured at the FIFA Women’s World Cup and represented Nigeria at the 2024 Olympics, but admits stepping onto the continental stage carries a different kind of significance.
“It’s very special, I’ve been in major international competitions, but I haven’t played in a WAFCON yet.
This will be my first time, and I’m very excited. I watched the last edition two years ago and already thought: ‘One day, it’ll be my turn.’ Now that moment is here,” Echegini told CAFOnline.
Nigeria, nine-time African champions, last lifted the WAFCON trophy in 2018. Their dominance was interrupted by South Africa in 2023, who beat them on penalties in the semi-final.
Echegini says the pressure to reclaim the title is not a burden but a responsibility the team is ready to bear.
“The pressure has always been there. When you wear the Nigerian jersey, you know the expectations are sky-high. But that’s a good thing. It’s those standards that shape who we are. As the new generation, we must carry on that tradition,” she added.
Stellar Season in France
Echegini heads to Morocco on the back of a strong campaign with PSG. She scored seven goals and provided four assists in 20 appearances across all competitions, helping her club finish second in France’s Division 1 Féminine behind Lyon.

She also featured in the UEFA Women’s Champions League, further cementing her place as one of Africa’s most promising midfielders.

With 11 international caps and two goals already to her name, the Dutch-born player is expected to play a key role for the Super Falcons.
Nigeria has been drawn in Group B, alongside Tunisia, Botswana, and Algeria. They will open their WAFCON 2025 campaign against Tunisia.

Victory in Morocco would mark a historic 10th continental title for the Super Falcons – a feat no other African side has achieved.
“Representing my country on the African continent is a huge honour. The Women’s AFCON is about history, culture, and emotion. I can’t wait to live it from the inside.” Echegini said.
