Frank Onyeka’s future at Brentford left hanging as Thomas Frank join Spurs

Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka is uncertain about his future at Brentford after Thomas Frank’s departure to Tottenham.

Onyeka joined Brentford in 2021 from Danish giants Midtjylland but has had a rollercoaster stay, with periods of regular game time under Frank’s tutelage and times when he was benched.

Last summer, Onyeka was deemed surplus to requirements and loaned to German Bundesliga club Augsburg, where he made 31 appearances and was one of Jess Thorup’s most reliable players. Despite his impressive performances, Augsburg decided not to sign him permanently, and he returned to Brentford.

With Thomas Frank’s exit, Brentford is set to appoint Keith Andrews as their new coach. Onyeka will need to impress Andrews during preseason training to secure his place in the team.

Andrews, who has been working as Brentford’s technical coach since last year, brings a fresh perspective, having previously worked with MK Dons, the Irish Under-21s, and the Irish senior team as assistant manager.

Onyeka’s future at Brentford remains uncertain, with several clubs showing interest in signing him. Girona FC, who qualified for the Champions League, has formally approached Brentford regarding Onyeka’s availability. Other potential suitors include Valencia, Real Valladolid, Las Palmas, Italian side Lecce, and Russian outfit CSKA Moscow.

Onyeka’s priority is to speak with the new coach and determine his role in the team. If he can’t secure regular playing time at Brentford, a move to another club might be on the cards. With a contract valid until 2027 and an option for an additional year, Brentford may demand a significant transfer fee.
