Ghana’s Black Queens Fire Warning Shot at Nigeria with 4-2 Win Over Benin

Ghana’s Black Queens produced a thrilling comeback victory, defeating Benin Republic 4-2 in a friendly match in Morocco. The win serves as a statement ahead of their highly anticipated clash with arch-rivals Nigeria on June 29, just before the Women Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The Black Queens trailed 2-1 at halftime but unleashed their full firepower in the second half, scoring three unanswered goals. Nina Norshie opened the scoring in the 4th minute, but Benin Republic equalized and took the lead. However, Alice Kusi brought Ghana level in the 55th minute, followed by Susan Duah’s smart finish in the 70th minute. Chantelle B. Hlorkah sealed the win with a fine strike in the 81st minute.

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s Super Falcons have arrived in Casablanca after a goalless draw against Portugal in Lisbon. The 22-player squad, bolstered by China-based Folashade Ijamilusi and U.S.-based superstar Asisat Oshoala, regrouped in Morocco on Wednesday. Standout displays from goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, defender Shukurat Oladipo, and veteran forward Francisca Ordega impressed with their discipline and composure.

Ghana women against Benin Republic

The Nigeria vs Ghana encounter on June 29 will be the final friendly for both sides before they open their WAFCON campaigns in Morocco next month. Nigeria, nine-time African champions, begin their quest on July 6 against Tunisia at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium, followed by fixtures against Botswana and Algeria in Group B.

Ghana, who finished runners-up in 1998 and 2002, lost both times to Nigeria. Sunday’s friendly presents a golden opportunity for the Black Queens to prove they are ready to challenge for their first continental title. With their impressive win over Benin, Ghana has sent a strong message to Nigeria and other competitors in the WAFCON tournament. The warm-up match between the Super Falcons and Black Queens of Ghana on the 29th of June will reignite the age long rivalry between Nigeria and Ghana.
