WAFCON 2024: Esther Okoronkwo reflects on Super Falcons bright start after Tunisia win

Super Falcons forward Esther Okoronkwo has hailed Nigeria’s opening performance at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) as a strong foundation to build on, following the Super Falcons’ 3-0 win over Tunisia in Group B on Sunday in Casablanca.

The 28-year-old forward came off the bench at halftime and made an immediate impact, assisting the third goal scored by Chiwendu Ihezuo.

Her contributions earned her the TotalEnergies Woman of the Match award—an impressive feat for a substitute.

Speaking during the post-match press conference, Okoronkwo acknowledged the early nerves in the game but praised the team’s ability to settle and grow into the contest.

“It’s like the first game ever, so we were just trying to get the energy together, work together, and create as many chances and opportunities as we could,” she said.

“Obviously, the goals are going to come—and they did. We just have to take the positives and go for the next game and then eventually get more goals.”

Nigeria had taken a 2-0 lead at halftime through goals from Asisat Oshoala and Rinsola Babajide.

Okoronkwo’s second-half involvement brought fresh energy and greater attacking cohesion as the Falcons pushed to extend their lead.

When asked what instructions she received from head coach Justin Madugu before being introduced, she said:

“Before I went in, he told me to be prepared and help the team up there. They need me—get the ball, try to lay off and find other teammates and play together as a team.”

Despite being a second-half substitute, Okoronkwo’s link-up play and composure in the final third underlined her growing importance in the Super Falcons’ set-up, and she was full of gratitude for the recognition.
