Super Falcons head coach Justine Maduga has attributed Nigeria’s laboured 1-0 win over Botswana in the 2024 women’s Africa cup of nations (Wafcon) to a mix of complacency and spirited opposition.
Nigeria sealed qualification for the quarter-finals of the 2025 WAFCON following a scrappy performance in which they struggled to impose themselves for long stretches.
Speaking to journalists post-match, Maduga pulled no punches in analysing his team’s display:
“It’s a combination of both factors. Botswana were determined to bounce back after losing their first game. On our part, some of us were a bit complacent and took things for granted.”

Despite the win, Maduga conceded that individual errors and tactical imbalances disrupted their flow.
“Some players didn’t put in their best, but that happens in football. We improved in the second half and managed to convert one of our chances.”

With Algeria up next, the coach confirmed the team would be rotated, especially with midfield enforcer Deborah Abiodun suspended for accumulated yellow cards.
“We’ll make changes to give others a chance. It’s also about managing our squad carefully. We aim to go far in this competition.”

Maduga played down fan criticism of officiating and the lack of technology like goal-line sensors or VAR, calling for calm:
“There are people responsible for evaluating referees. We must accept some decisions and move on.”

As the tournament progresses, Maduga insists Nigeria are prepared for tougher tests:
“We know what we’re here for. To be the best, you must beat the best. It’s a step-by-step journey.”
Nigeria’s next challenge is Algeria on Sunday, where a point will be enough to top the group.
